Are you bored with the same old choices for speaker finishes, well then you came to the right place. Here at MAL Designs we are building speakers out of a Solid Surface Material (Avian). What is Solid Surface Material you ask ? It is a material manufactured from Acrylic Modified Polyester Resin, with solid colour and pattern all the way through.
Most speakers are made from MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) then laminated wood veneers are added to the surface to make the speaker look as though it is made of solid wood. These wood venires are then stained and lacquered to attain the desired look. The choice of MDF is far superior to a solid wood because in most cases it has a higher density and is less expensive, this is where Solid Surface Material comes into play. Below is a chart that lists some of the popular woods for speaker building and compares the density or specific gravity. The specific gravity of water is 1.0 all other substances are either more or less dense.
